AIM & MISSION

A laboratory dedicated to elucidating the underlying molecular and pathophysiology surrounding neuropsychiatric disorders

The Human and Systems Genetics working Group is a transdisciplinary research enterprise (neurogenetics, psychiatry and molecular biology) to investigate complex neuropsychiatric disorders in diverse populations (such as those of Sub-Saharan Africa) in or to gain a better understanding of the relationship between genotype and phenotype in complex biological systems.

Key focus areas:

  • Promoting the use of genetic and clinical research to improve on the management of mental disorders and identify molecular genetic markers capable of predicting and explaining clinical phenotypes
  • Adding existing research on mental disorders and mental health to benefit diverse populations groups, especially those of Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Develop new research programmes focused on student which can be applied in real-world settings (we currently collaborate with both the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) (https://pgc.unc.edu/) and the ENIGMA-PGC (https://enigma.ini.usc.edu/) – the of the largest global research consortia on complex and mental health disorders).
  • Training and supporting neuropsychiatric genetic scientists in mental health genetics and molecular biology.

Promoting the use of psychiatry and neuropsychiatric genetics mental health findings in policy-making and in in good laboratory-practice.
