OUR HISTORY
Where we come from
The Department of Genetics at Stellenbosch University, with a history spanning back to 1898, has been a cornerstone of academic and research excellence. Birthed from the Department of Agricultural Botany in 1925, its legacy has been sculpted by luminaries such as Prof. JH Neethling, Prof FX Laubscher, Prof R deV Pienaar, Prof AE Retief, and Prof GF Marais. Each, in their time, brought unique contributions, from groundbreaking work in small grain and maize breeding to advancements in cytogenetics. As the department forged new paths in science, it also embraced a deeper transformation, evolving into a mosaic of diverse perspectives. This commitment ensures that the department isn’t just a beacon of scientific progress but also a model of unity in diversity. Now as the department explores fields like, systematic genetics, genetic modifications, population genetics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and advanced plant breeding, it stands as a monument to the synergy of collective brilliance, where the threads of history, innovation, and inclusivity intertwine.

Expert Guidance
Every research laboratory is staffed with a post-doctoral and/or senior researcher who bring a wealth of hands-on experience. Their knowledge is instrumental in guiding students from Honours, Master and PhD through the complexities of experimental design.
Academic Oversight
In addition to our researchers, each laboratory is under the vigilant guidance of one or two distinguished academics. Their primary role is to oversee and mentor students throughout their research journey, ensuring that they achieve the most rewarding and fruitful results.
